DRG Data Set Management
At the top of this page are the functions for adding new DRG data sets (see instructions below) and below them is a table of all the DRG data sets stored in the database, that are either public to everyone, internal to your organization, or owned by you. Public data sets are for demo and test use and cannot be modified. (If you have administrator rights for your organization, you will see all DRG datasets in your organization and you will also have the right to delete datasets owned by others.)
You can open the content of DRG data set on the DRG Data Sets page by clicking the open data set button at the beginning of the line.
You can download a DRG data set as text (txt) or Excel (xlsx) file by clicking the download button at the beginning of the line. You can choose whether to include secondary grouping fields. A text file can only be uploaded back to VisualDRG if the file doesn't contain secondary grouping fields.
You can edit the properties of your DRG data set by clicking the edit button at the beginning of the line. You can change the name of the DRG data set, transfer ownership to someone else within your unit, set the data set private or public for your organization, change the primary and secondary versions of the DRG grouping. When switching DRG versions, the data set is regrouped.
You can delete your DRG data set by clicking the trash can button at the beginning of the line.

Download new DRG data set from a file
You can download new DRG data set from a text file that meets the format requirements described below.
- Enter a unique name for the dat set that will appear in the menus and in the data set list.
- If your import file already contains a DRG group (DRG, MDC, RTC), click the Upload file button. If your import file does not include a DRG group, select the version of DRG that will group the data set during download and click the Upload and group file button.
- Then select your import file.
- The upload progress window opens. The upload steps are: transfer the file to the server, possible DRG grouping and save the data set to the database. You can close the window when the upload is complete.
File format for DRG encounter case data
A encounter case file is a text file (.txt) that contains 70 or 67 tab-separated fields, depending on whether it contains grouping results. Independently how number of diagnosis and procedures are set in settings the number of diagnosis and procedures must always be 20 in the files.
DRG case data files are TAB separated text files containing the following fields.
- Encounter ID is the unique case identifier in this file. Updates are performed by this key only and uniqueness violation results in erroneous updates. The length of this field must be at most 20 characters. You can use both numbers and text.
- 20 x 2 diagnoses fields: use diagnosis codes excluding any punctuation (+,*,.,&,#). So called diagnosis pairs are stored as asterisk-dagger pairs where the first code is the asterisk code and the second is the dagger code.
- 20 procedures codes: use procedures codes excluding any punctuation.
- Sex of the patient: 1=male, 2=female, 3=unknown.
- Age of the patient in days: integer value.
- Discharge type of the patient: 1 etc, depending on the country or DRG version configuration.
- Length of stay, integer value, in “gross days”, for example 1.1.2006-1.1.2006 = 1 day, 1.1.2006-2.1.2006 = 2 days, etc.
- Free text comments, at most 200 characters, reserved for own use, can be viewed and edited in VisualDRG but doesn’t affect DRG. You can store for example real encounter number, ward unit’s organization code and/or doctor’s id or name here.
- Actual patient case cost, integer value. Use 0, if this in unknown.
The following fields must be included in input data file only if you use option “Upload file” in VisualDRG. If you use option “Upload and group file” then these fields must not exist in the file and thus the number of fields is thus less.
- DRG (DRG code)
- MDC (MDC code)
- RTC (grouping error code)
Sample DRG case data file including fields DRG, MDC and RTC with just two sample lines from the beginning of the file. Lines might be wrapped in this sample but in actual file each record must be in one line. Tab characters are presented as > characters in this example.
